Edges (2016) is a group performance that explores the notions of ‘marginal’ and ‘central’, ‘visible’ and ‘invisible’ and through this process enhances the reflection on the idea of ‘perspective’ and ‘point of view’.
The place of theatre is one where viewpoints are formed constantly, both in the choices of what we make visible or invisible and in opinions, ideas, sensations that we possibly create/suggest with what we make visible. By giving a lot of ‘visibility’ to something or someone, we give it a certain sort of power and attention. By letting something being hardly visible we place it on the edges of interest... But even though we are maybe not actively looking at it, it is still there, it still exists and it still influences our ways of seeing or being.
Putting something into ‘light’ or into ‘darkness’ is a movement that belongs both to the practice of theatre but also to the history of ideas. In Edges this reflection gets translated into a play that stages a group of ‘background artists’ at work. During the entire piece we don’t see the ‘main actors’ but follow movements, gestures and viewpoints of the ‘corps de figurants’ who are, in contrast to most of the contemporary pieces, here performed by professional performers.
Edges proposes a journey through a landscape made of images, stories and sounds which continues to empower spectators’ gaze, creating a frame for imagining the visible and listening to the invisible.
« The play with fragments of stories, the layered reflections of the imaginary and the artfully-contradicting narrations in staged tableaux can be freely interpreted. These all are full of humor and in a quiet, calm way graceful and enchanting. It is by no means a dry discourse theatre overridden by theory but instead lovably playful. »
Frank Schmid, Kulturradio, 30 January 2016
« With a fine, sometimes unexpected humor, Ivana Müller invites us to a practice of reorganization of the gaze. (…) The new creation of Ivana Müller, carried out by accomplished performers who are able to invest the subtle space between transparency and precision, overflows the territory of live art, embraces the history of ideas, rewrites the question of power, of presence, of furtive and diffuse action, thus contaminating the ‘real’ with the margins, the edges and the borders. »
